*'Octopus', 'Donut', or ' Jump Ring' setting are all modified flush settings.
We'll be covering all of it!

In this class, we'll explore flush setting and modified flush (or 'octopus', 'jump ring', or 'donut') style setting methods.  We will utilize various stone setting burs, manual chisels/tools, and a hammer handpiece.  Students will become familiar with all of these tools and we'll also briefly cover fabricating your own chisels for modified setting styles.  We will discuss stones that are well suited for these setting styles as well as those that are not ideal choices.

Stones used will be durable, round, inexpensive materials that are suited for learning and practice (Cubic Zirconia).  This class will result in a simple wearable piece, however because of the short time frame of this class coupled with the topic being an advanced one, students are encouraged to focus on technique over 'creating a masterpiece'. Students' best time will be spent practicing and utilizing the experience and expertise of the instructor rather than focusing on creating a beautiful, complicated piece of jewelry in two days.  Once technique is established, students will be able to take their new skills back to their home studio(s) and combine them with their existing skills and style in whatever pieces they desire!

Students will fabricate a very simple stack of 2-3 rings OR one bracelet in which they will set multiple stones utilizing these setting styles.

*This class is limited to 6 students.  Seats are first come, first serve.

Materials included in the class fee are valued at $80, and include the following:

Cubic Zirconia stones
Burs for setting practice (you will keep these burs) that match stone sizes used
Silver for one bracelet or 2-3 stacking rings

If you'd like to 'upgrade' your stones for this class, Katie may have some additional options on-hand you can choose from.  Keep in mind stones will need to be durable enough for the setting styles, so options will be somewhat limited.
When first learning, hard stones work best for flush setting, and semi-hard stones or hard stones for modified flush setting.
Material fees for stone 'upgrades' will be assessed during class, and are based on individual student's stone choices.

Prerequisite: Some previous silversmithing/jewelry and stone setting experience is necessary. The project requires some basic familiarity with using a torch, jewelers saw, files, and flex shaft.  Students should be comfortable with basic bezel setting before advancing to flush or modified flush settings. Message us if you have questions!
